Coins & glass

HER PENNIES

The English Civil War led to a shortage of coins lasting from 1643 to 1672, twelve years into Charles II’s Restoration of 1660. Female sole-traders self minted their own currency, leaving their coins as otherwise unrecorded evidence of 140 businesses run by women in mid 1600’s London.

Digitally drawn images are acid etched onto brass and copper to create Perihelia’s currency.

GLASS & SCALE

Microscopes and telescopes are key icons for their prominence in the lives of the women celebrated in Perihelia. Glass objects are engraved to be projected, altering the scale of the drawing into a shadow portrait, as scale is altered through a microscope lens.
